Week 4 Notes
(School/Coach Items Are In Red)
Field Markings
- Fields must have some type of
broken line at least two yards off the sidelines. One school has decided to
use chalk on their “Field Turf” then wash it off later. Great idea!
Southern (South Orange County)
Hospitality!
- A tip of the hat goes to Capo
Valley High School & their Athletic Director, Christy Curtis. They sent an
email to each member of the officiating crew with information on the
upcoming game. Parking was set aside for the officials (volleyball
tournament, water polo & tennis were also going on at the campus). The field
was properly marked. Drinks were provided at half time. Burgers were
provided after the game. I was waiting for some to say, “Y’all come back
now.” Thanks again!
Feedback
- Let us know if there is something
we are missing. It is greatly appreciated.
Shifts
- There are teams that run versions
of the “Dallas Cowboy Flex”. It’s alright if they run only one version the
entire game. This means the same way every offensive play. If there is a
varied style and the defense enters the neutral zone, it’s a false start on
the offense. Field goals and extra points are offensive plays.
Kick Off Out of Bounds
- There are “3” options. The team
does not have to take the ball where it went out of bounds.
Afternoon Games
- Please arrive on the field on
time! 30 minutes before kick off is preferred. 15 minutes before kick off is
okay but you might be relying on your partners to do your pre-game
responsibilities. Arriving at kick off is a problem. Again, please arrive on
the field on time!
- There is no “Old Timing
Rule”! What is truly sad is that one crew decided to use a
running clock yet did not have a varsity game to go to. Adjustment to timing
is at the agreement of both coaches.
- Newer officials are forgetting to
stop the clock on first downs.
- Time outs; stop the clock but let
the referee signal which team. Otherwise, it looks like there is a first
down or change of possession on the field.
Observer’s Feedback
- Some referees and umpires
are not helping in the side zones.
- Referees are to help with
roughing the snapper on field goals & PAT’s.
- Some back judges are
closing too tight & too fast. Don’t worry about getting the ball and run
past players. You are likely to miss late hits.
- Flank officials need to work on
marking progress & communicating effectively with coaches.
Next Regular Meeting
- Wednesday, October 10th
7:00 PM at El Modena High School. Test on Rules 8, 9 & 10. Review for the
Classification Exam.
Keep Up The Good Work.
