Week 6 Notes
(School/Coach Items Are In Red)
Feedback
- Thank
you for submitting your game tapes. There are some “interesting” items to
review. A couple of plays are too close to say right or wrong. Keep them
coming.
False Starts
- Review
7.1.7 SITUATION A. If the quarterback pulls out that simulates the start
of a play, it’s a false start. If the movement is not sudden, the
quarterback can stand up to change the play or shift into another
position. Note that if the movement is sudden and the intent is to draw
the defense offside, it’s a false start with no regards if the defense
enters the neutral zone.
Ejection of Coaches
- If
you throw a flag on a person in the team box, try to have positive
knowledge of who is receiving the foul. An unsportsmanlike penalty to an
assistant coach is NOT also
assessed to the head coach. That is a basketball rule. Remember; if you
are having problems with the sidelines ask for help from the “Get Back”
coach. If that does not fix the problem, use sideline warnings. The first
one is just a warning. After that, yardage is involved.
Professionalism
- There are coaches that seek our advice.
We tell them what we are instructing and give rule interpretations. Don’t
say to a coach, “You don’t know what you are talking about.” 1) It is not
professional. 2) There are times when they are right!
- You never know who you are talking
to. There is a long-time Division I football official who is
moon-lighting as a freshman football coach. He calmly told an official
that he just missed a big time hold. The official’s response was “I’ve
been officiating over 20 years. I know what a hold is.” The amazing part
is that I was told of this by a person who was at the game. You never know who’s watching!
Game Tapes
- If
a team is gracious enough to make a copy for you, give them a replacement
tape (common courtesy).
- Have
“one” representative of the crew contact the head coach. Don’t ask for
multiple copies.
- I
know of two websites that have high school football games that you can
view anytime;
- It’s
good to learn from our mistakes. It’s better to keep an open mind.
Final Make-Up Meeting
- Wednesday,
October 24th 7:00 PM at El Modena High School. Room
422
